Journal Entry - Day 99 After Outbreak
I don't remember the last time I heard laughter. Not the kind people force out to keep from crying–real laughter.
Camp Two didn't last. They never do. We were holding steady for three weeks, enough time for people to start believing in “normal” again. Then someone got sloppy on patrol. Two infected slipped through the south barricade. By the time we cleared them, it was too late–three bitten, no ammo left for mercy shots. The healthy ran.

I stayed long enough to burn the bodies. If you don't, they come back. And it's not them anymore–it's something else.
The red paint's starting to fade from my arms. I need to find more soon. People think it's a war mark, and maybe it is now, but it started as a reminder. Red for blood. Blood for everyone I couldn't save. I keep count.
Rations are down to two cans of beans, one protein bar, and whatever rainwater I can collect in my tarp. I've got one clip left for the rifle. If I can make it another forty miles east, there's a supply cache I left last month. If it's still there, I might get through the next week.

The radio's been picking up static again, but last night–just for a second–I heard a voice. Male, calm, repeating coordinates. Safe Zone Delta. Same rumor I've been chasing since the first winter. If it's real, I'll find it. If it's not well, there's no one left to tell me I can't try.
End entry.
