Journal Entry - Day 111
I've been moving through what used to be called Reddings. Nothing red about it now, just shades of grey and the occasional splash of faded, blood-like rust. The heat is relentless, baking the asphalt until it cracks, and the dust gets into everything. Water is gold out here, and food well, food is a miracle.
Today, I found a miracle. I was poking around the remains of what looked like an old community center, maybe a church basement, judging by the stained-glass remnants in the rubble. It was mostly picked clean, but then I saw a section of wall that looked wrong. Too solid, too new. My gut told me to check it. Always trust the gut.

Behind it, tucked away in a small, hidden room, was a prepper's dream. Or a prepper's nightmare, depending on how you look at it, since they clearly didn't make it to enjoy their foresight. Stacks of buckets, sealed tight. I cracked one open, and the smell was nothing. No rot, no decay. Just the faint, processed scent of freeze-dried survival rations. Mylar bags, packed with oxygen absorbers. Rows and rows of them.
My hands were shaking as I pulled out a pouch labeled "Beef Stroganoff." Beef. I haven't seen real beef in I don't even know how long. This stuff lasts forever, they say. Twenty-five years. A whole quarter-century of meals. It's like finding a treasure chest in the middle of a desert.

I set up a small, smokeless fire, heated some scavenged water, and ate that stroganoff. It wasn't gourmet, but it was warm, it was filling, and it tasted like hope. The kind of hope that keeps you going when everything else is telling you to just lie down.
This isn't just food; it's time. Time to plan, time to rest, time to push further west, towards whatever Delta might be. It makes me wonder about the person who put all this together. Did they make it out? Did they suffer? Or are they just another shadow haunting these ruins? Whoever you were, thank you. Your labor wasn't in vain. I'll make sure of it.
