Journal Entry -- 16 August

The air still reeks of gunpowder and decay. I can't tell if the smell is clinging to my clothes or if it's just burned into my memory now. After the industrial complex incident–after the sprint through rusted corridors and the close call with those twitching freaks–I stumbled into a maintenance wing. Most of the place was gutted, wires hanging like vines, concrete walls stained with things I didn't want to identify.

But then I found it. A locker room. Intact. And tucked behind a steel door with a busted keypad was a shower stall. I didn't expect it to work. I just stood there staring at the nozzle, half expecting it to cough out dust or blood. But when I twisted the valve, water burst out–cold, clean, and real.

I stepped in fully clothed. Didn't care. The water soaked through my shirt, plastered it to my skin, and for the first time in days, I felt human again. I leaned into the stream, let it pound against my shoulders, my neck, my face. The red paint streaks on my arms and thighs bled into the drain. I watched them swirl away like ghosts.

I stayed there longer than I should've. Arms behind my head, eyes closed, trying to forget the sound of clicking jaws and the smell of rot. Just the hiss of water and the rhythm of my own breathing.

It didn't fix anything. But it reminded me I'm still alive.
