Totally Normal Customer

At 10:32 that morning, BlastersBB was quiet enough that Aoi could almost pretend she wasn't at work. The usual roar of the megatropolis was muffled behind the store's insulated windows, leaving only the soft hum of the climate system, the occasional electronic chirp from a display terminal, and the faint music playing through the ceiling speakers. Aoi was standing behind the compact-blaster display, restocking a shipment that had arrived earlier that morning. She picked up each weapon, checked its inventory tag, and placed it carefully in the appropriate slot, occasionally pausing to straighten one that wasn't quite aligned with the others. It was boring, but boring was good. After the chaos of the morning rush, she was perfectly happy to spend a few minutes doing something that didn't involve explaining the difference between a stun blaster and a military-grade weapon to someone who had somehow managed to confuse the two.

The electronic chime from the entrance interrupted her thoughts, and Aoi glanced toward the door as a customer walked into the store. He looked completely ordinary, wearing a casual hoody and carrying a backpack, but he approached the counter with such confidence that Aoi immediately assumed he knew exactly what he wanted. She finished placing the blaster in her hand on the display and gave him a professional smile. "Good morning. What can I help you find?"

"I need a rifle," he said.

Aoi picked up her inventory scanner and nodded. "Sure. What are you planning to use it for?"

The customer thought about the question for a surprisingly long time before answering, "...Shooting."

Aoi stopped typing. She looked at him for a moment, trying to determine whether he was joking. His expression suggested that he wasn't. "That's usually what they're for," she said.

He nodded enthusiastically. "Exactly."

Aoi resisted the urge to sigh and decided that perhaps she had simply asked the wrong question. She set the scanner down and leaned against the counter. "Okay, let's try this another way. What do you want to use it for?"

"I don't know."

Aoi's eyebrows rose slightly. "Do you have experiences with any other blasters?"

"I don't know."

"What's your budget?"

"I don't know."

She stared at him for a moment before glancing toward the ceiling as if hoping someone from management might suddenly appear and rescue her. Nobody did. "Okay," she said, returning her attention to him. "Do you know what kind of rifle you're looking for?"

"Yes."

That answer caught her off guard. After everything else he'd said, she had been expecting another "I don't know." Aoi straightened, picked up her scanner again, and smiled. "Great. What kind?"

The customer turned and pointed toward the back of the store.

"That one."

Aoi followed his finger and immediately regretted asking. Behind a section of reinforced glass stood the V-90 Thunderhawk, BlastersBB's enormous military-grade centerpiece. The rifle was so large and imposing that it looked less like something a person might purchase and more like something that belonged mounted to a military vehicle. It had its own display case, security system, and holographic information panel, and Aoi had once overheard a customer ask whether it came with its own transportation permit.
